Scrap Copper: Gradings Explained

Scrap Copper: Gradings Explained

Copper, renowned for its infinite recyclability, stands as one of the most precious metals for scrap collectors. Its versatility, evident in applications ranging from motor components to computer construction and industrial machinery, makes it a coveted commodity. For those involved in the scrap industry, understanding how to navigate the grading system is crucial, as it significantly impacts the value received for copper scrap.

Understanding Copper Grades

Dry Bright Copper

Often described as "bright and shiny," bare bright copper is the pinnacle of copper grades. It specifically refers to uncoated, unalloyed wires or cables, with a minimum thickness of 16 gauge. It's important to note that copper piping does not fall under this category.

#1 Copper

The second most valuable grade, #1 copper, encompasses clean, unalloyed, and uncoated copper, typically found in forms like bus bars, clippings, punchings, and commutator segments. Minor oxidation is acceptable, and while copper pipes can be classified under #1 grade, they must exhibit minimal corrosion and lack fittings.

#2 Copper

Characterised by a slightly tarnished appearance, #2 copper is the third most valuable grade. It comprises unalloyed wire, pipe, or solid metal with residual solder, paint, or other coatings. To qualify, the copper content must be at least 94%, and the wire must be uninsulated and less than 1/16 inch in diameter.

#1 Insulated Wire

This grade features clean, unalloyed, uncoated, and untinned copper wire or cable, encased in plastic insulation. The wire must be at least 16 gauge thick but doesn't require stripping of the insulation.

#2 Insulated Wire

Comprising unalloyed wire thinner than 16 gauge with heavy, double, or plastic insulation, this grade often includes telecommunications and electronic wiring, such as outlets and extension cords. Some coatings or minor corrosion do not disqualify it from this grade.
